Pica

(Warning: this one's probably a little gross.)

Here's one of the aforementioned pre-typed posts. I've got a lot of others that are half-finished, all about EDs and ProAna and related stuff, but I've been doing research for them. (Who researches for their blog? This one.) I'll post them randomly as I go along. (The next one will be about why I post gross things like the following, ha ha.)

While doing some research on celiac's disease, I saw a mention of Pica (here). Apparently it can be a sign of gluten intollerance in children, and so once again I think back on the strange eating habits in my past.

Pica is a disorder which causes the person to have an appetite for things that aren't food, or edible things that are somewhat abnormal like raw rice or pure salt. It is generally attributed to a biochemical deficiency, for example iron. (And I can assume it has some connection to compultive behavior, too.) Basically, your body knows it needs more iron, so it just starts grabbing.

The only thing I still do is bite my nails and cuticles, but when I was younger I used to do a lot more. Most of the behaviors were "beaten" out of me (by myself), since they're obviously not socially acceptable, and caused me great embarassment even when nobody was watching. There is nothing I hate more than being embarassed.

Besides nails, scabs and dry flakes of skin found their way to my mouth. When I was very young and still flexible enough, I'd try to chew on my toenails as well.

After fingernails, the most noticable issue was hair. I wouldn't eat it on purpose, per se, but I spent a lot of time chewing on the ends of tendrils.(There's a name for this, interestingly: Trichophagia.) My step-father frequently taunted me for it. It seems to have worn off, perhaps because I got out of the habit after cutting my hair very short. Once it was long again, I reverted to repeatedly smelling strands or poking my cheek with the ends, which is still weird but at least a little more subtle. (Preceptive readers will notice my verbal eye-roll there.)

But the weirdest one? Pebbles. Tiny, itty-bitty pebbles picked out of the sand at summer cam, or pryed out of the cracks of my sneakers. I remember them as round and grey, and I'd roll them around in my mouth before spitting them out, or swollowing if they were very very microscopic. I'd totally forgotten about that. I'm sort of surprised I didn't get in trouble. Once again, my propensity for Not Getting Caught rears its head.

The general gist is that all these things seem to indicate a lack of calcium, salt, fatty acids, or iron, which my body instinctively craved. Due to my ADD-induced inability to hault my compulsive behaviors, I couldn't stop my body as it tried to go for the nearest available source. Perhaps I was deficient due to the undiagnosed Celiacs. Perhaps it was because of my picky diet. Who knows.

The important thing to recognize is: It's all connected.

I've heard of other people with eating disorders that also had pica, but I've never heard about anything specific. (I can assume that's because it's so embarassing.) Sources say pica is a separate eating disorder than the others, though it might be connected to malnutrition that comes from another ED.

For me, I think it doesn't have to do with my other ED issues. Perhaps it's the celiac's, or maybe just the ADD. Or maybe something else.

While looking for information about the pica/ADD connection, I came across one concerned parent complaining that his child was sneaking sips from empty soda cans. This rang a bell for me - my younger brother, who also is ADD diagnosed, used to do this!

By the way, nail biting is apparently very common in people with eating disorders. Though some believe it's a sign of dealing with stress, others believe it's a reaction to either understimulation or overstimulation of the mind, which seems accurate in my case. It's associated with the recently named group of Body-Focused-Repetitive-Disorders, which includes anorexia and bulimia, as well as OCD, body dysmorphic disorder, and other related things. They believe now (finally) that these disorders mostly have root in genetics.

In other words, everything I do is because of the weird way my brain is wired. There's no one place to pin-point it.

Hey! I just read your comment on my blog and thought I'd check out yours too =]

I can't believe I'm admitting this here, but I used to do all of the stuff you did (aside from the pebbles). I've stopped now, but it is still really embarassing to admit. I've heard of Pica before but I've always only associated it with people who swallow cotton balls or metal objects or plastic or something, and not so much with eating flakes of skin or scabs or whatever..

Annyway, I'm going to get off topic as usual so I'll stop here. This was a fascinating read, though, so I'll look forward to reading your other research-posts xx

Thanks for reading! Good to know I'm not the only weirdo, lol.

Isn't it nice to know there's a reason for it? That way it's not so embarassing. It's not like we chose to eat stupid crap because we thought it was a good idea.

But really, I'm wonder how much of this goes undiagnosed. I mean, there were a lot of places that mentioned pica in people with development issues (aka they're retarded), but that it was less common otherwise. I'm thinking they're wrong. I bet there's a ton of us, particularly those of us with other compulsive disorders.

(I found in my searching that apparently pebbles are pretty common for children with pica who are older than toddler age. How werid is that. Mmm, delicious rocks.)

I'd never heard of pica before, but now that i think about it, i can remember doing all of those things. The fingernails, the scabs (if the wound bled after i ripped off the scab, i'd often put some of the blood in my mouth too), the skin, the hair, the toenails, empty soda cans (chewing on anything metal really), even the pebbles (though i never swallowed). I did it all. Then when i was 12 (and trying to stop doing all of those things because i realized they were odd) i started complaining about being tired all the time. My mom bought me some iron supplements, and my cravings for all those things ceased... err, except i still chew on metal stuff sometimes... don't tell anyone. haha. Maybe that was my problem. That's truly fascinating.

Ahhh, I did the blood thing, too! Didn't think about that one!

And I've been eternally tired since puberty. Celiacs damages your intestine and makes you unable to absorb nutrients. I'm assuming that's the origin of my problem, which would explain why supplements weren't helping (because it couldn't absorb them anyway).

It really is facinating, how everything just clicks together once you know more about it!

New: Apparently, obsessive pimple-popping is one of these behaviors too...Dammit!

Freaky. Deaky.
I do all the things (no pebbles though) you do. And now I am an obsessive pimple popper. So much so that I seek out clogged pores to clear >.>.... Wow.

I found out about pica about a year ago because when i was little i've had abnormal problems that relate to pica as well. The nail biting, toe nail biting, I would chew on paper...sometimes eat it. But my biggest problem and maybe it had to do with staying at my grandma's who smoked all of the time were eating burned up match heads...or cigarette ash. I know that's probably super disgusting but i thought I'd share my personal problem with pica.

I'm Dani (btw =] )
erm i'm not sure about this. but what about just eating blood? (i know it sounds stupid VAMPIRES lol) but as a child i would repetitively cut myself, just to eat the blood. =/

Oh wow! That's so interesting! I bite my nails and cuticles too! I never thought it might be ed related....Thanks for posting such a fascinating post!
Stay strong <3

Anon: I've got more blackheads than pimples, and I'm always looking for ways to clean them out".

Miss Adora: Oh, jeeze, I ate paper too! Everyone keeps adding to my list! And I've heard of eating matchheads...they're 50% potassium, so maybe it was a deficiency in that?

Dani: It's probably a form of Pica, but there's also Renfield Syndrome, a "disorder used to describe an obsession to drink blood". But if it wore off after you grew up, it migth just be chocked up to "childhood curiosity", lol. I also know that humans have an instinct to literally lick their wounds, so it might have to do with that too.

Dot: There's some talk about nail-biting (and I think hair-pulling) in Amiee Liu's Gained, targeting it as another body-modifying-control issue, basically.

(And crayons! Crayons just occurred to me. I got yelled at all the time for that.)

And dried Elmer's glue, but every kid ate that, lol. (Every sped kid like me, anyway.)

I confess... I eat bricks. Sandstone bricks so you can bite into them. I live by a vacant lot that used to be a brick yard so I have a good supply. ummm... yummy?

Hey sorry it took so long to reply back, my work internet was being lame and wouldn't load my bookmark lol.

It is interesting to know there's a reason and we're not just all freaks haha. And you're right, I think it is FAR more common than people think - people are just way too embarassed to own up to it. My sister, for example, tends to eat her eye goobers. And THAT really sends me over the edge into cringeville hahaha.

The spot-popping and blackout-clearing-out-of deal is me all over... I CAN NOT leave something on my face like that.

I used to eat matchheads too! Haha this is so weird. We're just a huge mass of common ground in this community heheh. I never ate paper, but my best guyfriend used to chew on it obsessively at school and then stick the chewed pieces to his desk legs. They dried like paper mache, it was kind of trippy haha.

Wow, I can really relate to this post and you all! For as long as I can remember i've eaten the skin and nails on my fingers and toes. basically I'd eat whatever hung on my body. Yet I'm a total germaphobe.

WEIRD! The comment thing, ya know where you have to type in a code to avoid spam? For the comment I just did, the code was "skinne" LOL!

thank you thank you thank you for posting this. i've been trying to figure out if what i have is pica or a form of self-harm .i tear the skin around my fingernails and toenails off with a sharp object and then eat the skin... my fingers and toes are constantly in state of raw/wounded/bleeding and healing up for the next round. i'm so effing OCD about it that i will have a panic attack if i can't do it when i feel like i have to. yeah, kind of getting in the way of my life a little bit. plus, you know... my eating disorder (ana) and stuff.
its been getting worse as i get older and i'm getting more and more freaked out by it because i'm afraid it might be leading to a more serious form of cutting.
i'm terrified to tell anyone in my life about this... everyone already thinks i'm messed up. but... i'm feeling a bit of relief to see that i'm not alone.
thanks again.

Dermatilomania is where you pick at your skin, nails, cuticles etc to the extent that it bleeds. it's a compulsion, some people think it's related to body dispmorphic disorder, some to OCD, both disorders that can be associated with EDs. Just another possible side to the story :)

DepressionFromNowhere said...

Hey, I've just stumbles across your post and I hope you don't mind me commenting but this post really struck a chord with me.

I still bite (and eat) my fingernails and the skin around them. I used to do the same with toenails when I was younger. I never ate pebbles but I used to pull the threads out of towels and eat them.

I don't have an ED exactly, but I do have a few issues surrounding eating and weight loss.

I wonder if you're right...if it is all connected.
Something to think about.

Thanks!
